Sweet Thai Basil
Grow time: 3 weeks
Sweet Thai Basil, recognizable from its purple stem and sturdy structure, is a strong flavored, licorice-like herb that is native to Southeast Asia. Slightly spicier than Italian basil, this member of the mint family has a crisp, anise-clove taste.
Sweet Thai basil is a popular accompaniment to the Vietnamese noodle soup, Phở, as well as a key ingredient for many Thai curry sauce and stir fry recipes. Unlike its close-relative, Italian basil, sweet Thai basil is stable under conditions of high heat and extended simmering. It can also be used in place of Italian basil to bring a more pungent flavor to a dish.
Italian basil is a good source of Protein, Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Riboflavin and Niacin, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Vitamin B6, Folate, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Zinc, Copper and Manganese.
