Red Italian basil is equivalent in taste to green Italian basil. It is used by chefs to add a splash of vibrant purple to the plate.

Italian basil, also commonly called sweet basil, large-leaf basil or Genovese basil, has a strong, pungent aroma that cannot be mistaken. Its microgreens share the same flavor, with the benefit of a quicker growing time and complete lack of bitterness. Full of dimension, its subtle clove-like taste is followed by a slightly sweet finish. This popular herb is best experienced fresh, as it quickly loses its aromatic flavor after refrigeration or when dried.


Originally cultivated in India, Italian basil is a staple within Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. Commonly recognizable as a key ingredient for making pesto, Italian tomato and meat sauces, or as a topping for a Margherita pizza, Italian basil’s flavor is a surprisingly unique complement to sweet and tangy fruits, as in a refreshing basil lemonade or tossed into a fruit salad.


Italian basil microgreens are a good source of Protein, Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Riboflavin and Niacin, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Vitamin B6, Folate, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Zinc, Copper and Manganese.
